Easy Access to Methods

Biological Procedures Online covers the following topics in all branches of the biological and medical sciences:

  • Reports of new research techniques and applications of existing techniques;
  • Technical analysis of research techniques and published reports;
  • Validity analysis of research methods and approaches to judging the validity of research reports;
  • Hypothesis development and experimental design;
  • Application of common research methods;
  • Reviews of existing techniques.

BPO articles include a step-by-step protocol that allows researchers to implement methods in "cookbook" fashion at the benchtop.

We seek manuscripts from innovators who have overcome technical challenges or developed new methods. If this describes your work, see our Instructions for Authors and then contact us about your idea.

We are an open access-based journal. That means readers can always access our articles through our site, through PubMedCentral, and through other archives free of charge when authors have elected to publish under the Open Access model. We have used this model since 1997 and other major publishers like BioMed Central and PLoS share our belief that open access is the best way to publicize scientific work. All BPO articles must pass a stringent peer review process to ensure that only the highest quality literature is published.

Origins and Goals

Biological Procedures Online exists to improve access to techniques and methods in the medical and biological sciences. In 1997, Dr. Mark Reimer founded the journal while at the University of Waterloo, Canada. BPO began publishing peer-reviewed literature in 1998 and continues to provide a reliable source of quality peer-reviewed procedural information.
